Who we are

One council. Fourteen trades. Every jobsite in Middle Tennessee.

The Nashville Building & Construction Trades Council is the united voice of the craft unions that build this region — from the interstate interchanges and hospital towers to the data centers, stadiums, and power plants that keep it running.

Each of our affiliates is a self-governing local union with its own hall, its own contracts, and its own apprenticeship program. The Council is where they come together: to coordinate manpower across trades, to protect standards on public and private work, to settle jurisdiction without shutting a job down, and to advocate for workforce development and workers’ rights.

For a contractor or owner, that means one phone call reaches every trade on the project. For a worker, it means a career with a wage you can raise a family on, health care that covers your kids, and a pension you can actually retire on.

“An hour of union craft labor is the best value in construction — because the worker walking onto your job has already spent years learning to do it right the first time.” Nashville Building & Construction Trades Council
  • Trained, not just hired. U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeships incorporate classroom and on-the-job training to ensure we train to a higher standard.
  • Safety first, always. OSHA-certified crews, journey-level mentoring, and a lower incident rate than the open-shop average.
  • Local hiring. Wages earned in Middle Tennessee by Middle Tennesseans go back into the local economy.

The trades

Fourteen crafts, one workforce

Each affiliate trains and dispatches the specialists a modern project depends on. Find the one that fits how you like to work.

Earn while you learn

Graduate with a career. Not a loan payment.

Our affiliates run self-sufficient registered apprenticeship programs that pay you from day one. You work alongside a journeyworker, take classes at your local’s training center, and get a raise every time you hit the next milestone.

  • No tuition and no student debt — training is funded by the trust between our unions and their contractors.
  • Three to five years to journey level, with a nationally portable certification at the end.
  • Family health coverage, a defined-benefit pension, and an annuity.
  • Open to anyone 18 or older with a high school diploma or GED — no experience required.

Veterans

Many of our programs are approved for GI Bill® benefits, letting you draw a housing allowance on top of your apprentice wage.

Career changers

The average new apprentice is in their mid-twenties. Bringing work ethic from another field counts for more than experience with a tool.

High school grads

Start after graduation. Pre-apprenticeship pathways like Music City Construction Careers can help you get application-ready.

Women in the trades

Union scale means the same rate for the same classification — no negotiating, no pay gap. Our affiliates actively recruit and mentor tradeswomen.
