International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers & Helpers
Assemble, install and repair boilers, pressure vessels, tanks and stacks. Boilermakers build and maintain electric power plants, refineries, pulp and paper mills and steel mills, including outage and turnaround work.
International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers
Install, maintain and repair masonry: brick, block, stone, marble, tile and terrazzo, plus cement, plaster, refractory work and restoration, pointing, cleaning and caulking.
United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America
Build and repair building frameworks and structures — concrete formwork, framing, stairways, doorframes and partitions — along with interior systems, acoustical ceilings, floor covering and finish carpentry.
Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association
Place and finish concrete — flatwork, structural and decorative concrete, curb and gutter — and apply plaster, stucco and EIFS systems across commercial and industrial work.
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
Install, maintain and repair electrical power, communications, lighting and control systems. IBEW members work in utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government.
International Union of Elevator Constructors
Install, repair, modernize and maintain elevators, escalators, moving walkways and other lifts — one of the most rigorously trained and safety-critical crafts in construction.
International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers
Install, repair and maintain thermal insulation on piping, ductwork, boilers and vessels for energy performance, condensation control, process stability and personnel protection, plus firestopping and abatement.
International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers
Install structural and reinforcing iron and steel to form and support buildings, bridges and roads — plus rigging and machinery moving, precast and curtain wall erection, ornamental metals and welding.
Laborers’ International Union of North America
Skilled craft laborers across site preparation, concrete forming and finishing, scaffold building, pipelaying, asphalt and paving, bridge and tunnel work, demolition, and hazardous material abatement.
United Brotherhood of Carpenters — Millwrights
Install, maintain, diagnose and repair compressors, pumps, conveyors, gas and steam turbines, monorails and extruders — precision work held to tolerances as tight as a thousandth of an inch.
International Union of Operating Engineers
Heavy equipment operators, mechanics and surveyors who drive and control the machinery used to build roads, bridges and structures — plus stationary engineers running building and industrial plant systems.
International Union of Painters and Allied Trades
The finishing trades: industrial, commercial and decorative painting and coatings, drywall finishing, wall coverings, glazing and glass work, and floor covering installation.
United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry
Plumbers, pipefitters, steamfitters, welders and HVACR service technicians — building and maintaining the piping systems behind commercial, industrial, energy, medical and pharmaceutical facilities.
United Association — Road Sprinkler Fitters
Install, inspect, test and service life-saving and property-saving fire sprinkler and suppression systems. Local 669 holds nationwide jurisdiction for sprinkler fitting.
International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers
Fabricate and install duct and ventilation systems, architectural and specialized metal, and industrial systems — plus welding, service and refrigeration, and testing, adjusting and balancing for indoor air quality.
International Brotherhood of Teamsters
Construction Teamsters move the materials a jobsite runs on — ready-mix and material delivery, heavy haul and equipment transport — along with riggers, demolition workers, landscapers and pipeline workers.
How it fits together
When six crafts share a floor, someone has to sequence the work and settle jurisdiction before it costs the schedule. That is the Council’s daily job.
On workforce development, apprenticeship utilization and workers’ rights, sixteen unions carry far more weight together than any one of them alone.
